DVI and DisplayPort is for computer monitors. But that's not set in stone. But if you have any problems with the HDMI cable (bad colors, resolution, etc), using the HDMI to DVI adapter will help. The HDMI port on the mini supports 1080p, but 1920x1200 if use the included adapter.

I can only imagine this is because of the typical use case I mentioned above. HDMI is for TVs which are typically 1080p, so it defaults to that. This also depends on the monitor and if it's sending the EDID in a correct format. Some monitors (lots of Samsung models) have a problem with this. Some monitors also have a switch between TV mode (HDMI) and computer mode (DVI, DP) somewhere in the settings.

If that doesn't work, use the adapter. If that doesn't work either, look at the monitor settings. Well, it's complicated. DVI can carry both analog and digital video signals, although these day they're hardly ever used for analog video. The analog video is the same electrical signal that a VGA cable would carry. The digital video signal is the same electrical signal that an HDMI cable would carry. (The HDMI cable would also, separately, carry an audio signal.) So in general DVI and HDMI are pretty interchangeable.

However, DisplayPort encodes the video in a totally different way than these other cables. DisplayPort is packet-based. Because of this, you need a converter box in order to connect a DVI port on one end to a DisplayPort on the other. (Many cables now have the converter built in.) Personally, I prefer to avoid these, because it's just another potential point of failure (and it tends to be more expensive).

For that reason it's probably best for OP to just use HDMI.

So I've begun the long-awaiting switch from PC to Mac in the office and picked up a new Mac Mini yesterday. We currently use dual screen on all machines in the office. I'm wanting to hook these up to the mac mini and use dual screen. The mac mini has thunderbolt and hdmi output. I've done some research and what it looks like I would need is a:- DisplayPort Thunderbolt to HDMI / DVI / VGA Adaptor (like the one pictured below):- Yet, as I was about to purchase one of these adaptors, I noticed that the description said that only one of these outputs can be used at once (so I wouldn't be able to have one monitor plugged into the DVI and the other plugged into the VGA as per the above photo). Is this right? If so, what is the recommended setup to have a working dual screen setup with the mac mini?
