Yes, you do have to spend a little time reformatting for mac but it was no problem doing so. However, I do not like the Smartware interface that wd installs onto your computer to manage files. It came ready to use with windows but converting it was a piece of cake. I was using it in about 10 minutes. One of my objectives was to be able to exchange images with my daughter. She operates under Windows. I, as I have indicated, use Mac OS X. Formatting it as FAT 32 did the trick.
I would say that this product exceeded my expectations. Even my hopes.

It does operate as quickly as one would expect, given that it has a USB 2 interface. Plenty fast for my application. My next storage purchase was to buy a 3TB backup disk for my system.
