Does this happen with a particular Document/Spreadsheet? If so suspect the Spreadsheet. Try: hold shift key down and try opening Excel. Quit Excel, then locate all occurrences of com.microsoft.excel.plist remove to trash. I recommend that you download the utility EasyFind type in search box and initiate search. (Much easier and safer than digging into system).

I have faced a similar issue for months now and found a very simple working solution. In my case the main hard drive had a double quote (') character as a name. Once it was renamed to a regular name containing only letters & spaces, then Microsoft Excel was able to open & save files. Check the name of your hard disk and any other folders leading to where you have your Excel file.

Change any hard disk/directory names that contain any special characters. Hope that works for you too!
