My MBP hard drive just recently failed. Before sending it off to WD for a new one, I plugged it into my PC and lo and behold the bootcamp partition came up and I was able to grab some files. OS X El Capitan brought a makeover to Disk Utility, the all-purpose app for managing Mac’s drives. While it retains most of its key features, including the ability to partition a drive into multiple volumes, it has changed the process a bit. It does this by reading the settings partition to determine the boot partition for that OS, and then instructs the firmware to 'soft-reboot' using the OS's boot partition.
