External Dual Layer Dvd Burner For Mac
Thank you all so much for your replies. I will definately be looking into the Plextor and the Pioneer drives.
No offense to the Lacie. To the poster that asked why I do not go with an internal drive here is why: I prefer to keep the old combo internal drive and use the external firewire drive so that I have two DVD readers. I believe in using external firewire since I already have 3 external large HD's. I find them much easier to deal with if I ever have to troubleshoot (which I admit is rarely).
Nov 30, 2006 Hey everyone, I am looking for recommendations on an external (USB or Firewire) dual layer dvd burner. I am looking to spend around or less than $100. Use disc drives and burners to read and record your data backups. Choose DVD drives that play pre-recorded media and write to blank media. Select internal drives to upgrade your computer system, or select external drives for plug-and-play convenience.
Also with just an internal drive if something goes wrong that drive one is in BIG trouble! Dual Layer: DVD-R DL Double Layer: DVD+R DL Many burners have the words dual format, but they don’t mean that they support both of the 2-layer formats. Also, if you want to be able to burn DVD-Video movie discs to play in your DVD-player, you will want to check for compatibility: Ken Leonard wrote: I am ready to upgrade my single layer DVD burner to dual layer external firewire (400). Having a hard time even finding such a drive.
Sony has one but the info says it is for PC only? The drive must be firewire 400 compatible and able to work on a Mac G4. Any recommends or help most appreciated. Sorry, but this is just plain incorrect. Sony makes their own mechanism and have for many years. They do OEM their mechanisms to other companys to badge under their own name and with their own roms. Sony mechanisms are considered to be some of the best quality made.
I personally prefer Pioneer. As to Ken, I recommend making your own. Buy a FireWire 400 5.25' enclosure that uses the Oxford 911 chipset. Buy a Pioneer 110 mechanism. Mount the mechanism in the enclosure; don't change any jumpers or such on the mechanism. On your Mac you may need to install a small patch called Patch Burn which is a free download and works perfectly to make it so this latest and greatest Pioneer drive will work with Tiger or Panther.
(this is the Pioneer mechanism) (this is a high quality aluminum case with both FW and USB2) Total cost is $98 + shipping riversideray wrote: By the way, Sony drives are nothing more than rebadged Lite-ons. I'd go with the Pioneer. Just my 2 cents worth. Sorry, but this just isn't correct either.
There are a couple of drives that do both DL formats. The one I prefer is the Pioneer DVR-110. Here is the specs: Cache: 2M CD-R: 40X CD-RW: 32X DVD+R: 16X DVD+R DL: 8X DVD+RW: 8X DVD-R: 16X DVD-R DL: 8X DVD-ROM: 16X DVD-RW: 6X cybermice wrote: Dual Layer: DVD-R DL Double Layer: DVD+R DL Many burners have the words dual format, but they don’t mean that they support both of the 2-layer formats. Any recommends or help most appreciated. I did not know that about Sony and LiteOn.missed the story. As for the case your listed, THANKS! I had bought 3 of these cases from this same reseller, but had lost their web address and needed to order more, so thank you for posting it. Each time I have ordered from them, they have even shipped the same day! How to know if a file is a virus.
DavidH wrote: Sony relegated their drives to LiteOn last year. Article verifiable by searching below. A Wealth of info here: Another is, real techies at both sites. Reviews and forums to boot. I use a Plextor PX716A in an external Firewire case (easy to do, if you can handle a screwdriver) Plextor was from BestBuy on a promo and is worth the price.
